Diamonds are mined in over 22 countries and produced by the ton. Most of these alternatives are found in single locations sometimes in quantities measured in grams per decade.


1. Red Emerald (Bixbite) Found Only in One Place on Earth


If you have never heard of Red Emerald, you are not alone. Even most professional jewellers have never held one. Red Emerald technically called Bixbite, sometimes marketed as Red Emerald is a red variety of beryl, the same mineral family as traditional green emeralds and aquamarine. The mineral was first identified by prospector Maynard Bixby in the Thomas Range of Utah in 1904, but the world's only significant gem-quality deposit was discovered in 1958 by uranium prospector Lamar Hodges in the Wah Wah Mountains of Beaver County, Utah.


Gem-quality Red Emerald crystals are so rare that for every one mined, approximately 150,000 diamonds are pulled from the Earth. The stones form under an extraordinarily specific set of geological conditions that simply do not exist anywhere else on the planet. Most crystals that are found are small under one carat and the vivid raspberry red color, caused by trace amounts of manganese, makes even flawed specimens highly collectible. A fine, faceted Red Emerald can command prices exceeding $10,000 per carat.

2. Painite Once the World's Rarest Mineral


For decades, Painite held the Guinness World Record as the rarest mineral on Earth. Discovered in Myanmar in 1951 by British mineralogist Arthur C.D. Pain, only two crystals were known to the scientific world for the first two decades. By 2004, fewer than 25 specimens of Painite had ever been found a count that earned it the Guinness World Record as the world's rarest gem mineral in 2005.

That number has since grown slightly with new deposits found in Myanmar, but gem quality Painite remains extraordinary. The dark brownish-red crystals are complex borosilicates containing zirconium, calcium, boron, aluminum, and oxygen a chemical combination so unusual that nature rarely assembles it. Collectors and institutions compete fiercely for facetable specimens.


3. Paraiba Tourmaline The Electric Blue That Shocked the Gem World


When Paraiba Tourmaline first appeared at a Brazilian gem show in 1989, experienced dealers thought they were seeing a synthetic stone. The colours electric neon blues and greens that seemed to glow from within were simply unlike anything the natural world had produced before. They were wrong. Paraiba Tourmaline is very much natural, and it is extraordinarily rare.

The stone gets its remarkable colour from traces of copper and manganese an almost unprecedented combination in tourmaline. The original Paraiba mine in northeast Brazil is largely exhausted. Subsequent finds in Mozambique and Nigeria produce similar stones, but true Brazilian Paraiba commands the highest premiums, often exceeding $30,000 per carat for top specimens.


4. Alexandrite The Stone That Changes Colour


Alexandrite is sometimes called the "emerald by day, ruby by night" because of its extraordinary colour change property. Under daylight or fluorescent light, fine Alexandrite appears a rich bluish green. Under incandescent or candlelight, the same stone transforms to a deep purplish red. Hauyne (pronounced hoe-EEN) is a gemstone so obscure that even specialist jewelers may never encounter one in a career.
