Chrysoberyl

Updated: Nov 7, 2024

Chrysoberyl is renowned primarily for its notable variations, Alexandrite and Cat's Eye, the latter being a form of chrysoberyl fashioned into a polished cabochon, distinguished by its captivating chatoyancy, which projects a distinct line of light down the stone's centre. Nevertheless, when it comes to facetable Chrysoberyl gems, the majority are yellow, although shades of brown, green, or orange are also encountered. Typically, Chrysoberyl gemstones are relatively free of imperfections, although larger stones exceeding a few carats are a rarity. With a remarkable hardness rating of 8.5, Chrysoberyl stands as one of the most durable gemstones, making it an ideal choice for everyday wear.

The beguiling cat's eye phenomenon witnessed in this variety results from minuscule, needle-like fiber inclusions, causing light to coalesce into a slender streak or 'eye.' It's worth noting that the term "cat's eye" is most commonly linked to chrysoberyl, and when used in isolation without a gemstone-specific prefix, it invariably denotes Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl, celebrated as the most renowned and valuable of all cat's eye gemstones.

Chrysoberyl holds the distinction of being June's birthstone and the chosen gemstone to mark the 18th anniversary.
